A work in progress… (from left) Ayee McHughes, Nya McHughes, Matt Jonas, Jasonn Michael Perkins and Didge McHuges.

Matt Jonas is already well-known nationally for his airbrushing talents, including the giant painting of a whale on his front fence as you enter Goolwa, and now he’s featuring his new works at Victor Harbor for the SA Whale Centre.

His passion for whales is clearly shown in a new 9.6 metre-long painting to be installed above a new entrance being built in the centre.

With assistance from a Skills Development grant through Country Arts SA and the state government, the project has also been invaluable experience for four local youths and Didge McHughes who also worked on this spectacular mural.

SA Whale Centre coordinator Leah Pippos said the mural would add a three-dimensional aspect to the new entrance to be opened in early May.

The mural will depict two Southern Right whale calves. The grant was also sought to assist visitors to the SA Whale Centre to fully comprehend the superb size of the Southern Right whale calf.
