SECOND VALLEY
The hamlet of Second Valley has the spirit of SA’s History Festival – literally. Meet Spirit, a beautiful kelpie-cross pictured with her mate Roger (right) taking their owners Iain and Hayley Calvert for a walk at their Leonards’ Mill, Second Valley.
They will join a lot of other canines when this quaint hamlet hosts A Million Paws Walk with donations to the RSPCA as part of the history celebrations. And Spirit should know what this great cause means – her owners saved her from the RSPCA rescue home a few years ago. Well done.
Iain and Hayley took over Leonards’ Mill last year and have done a marvellous job in revitalising this historic flour mill, which is celebrating its 160th anniversary.
As part of SA’s History Festival, they have created an impressive timeline illustrating the value of the mill in the Second Valley district story including the rise and fall of the wheat industry, influences of its owners and the various functions the mill has served over its proud existence. It is a fascintating chapter of our regional past.
There is also special history month “From Flour to Fine Food” event at the Mill on Friday, May 25 from noon-4.30pm, including a tour around the complex from 12.30pm.
The township will host the Million Paws Walk on Sunday, May 20, a leisurely guided stroll capturing the town’s history with your dog from the Second Valley Soldiers’ Memorial Hall to the beach. Entry is $20 including lunch and a RSPCA donation.
Iain, who has valuable experience in the hospitality industry, and Hayley, have a two-year-old son Gillan. They have made exciting changes to the restaurant and bar, and with chef Peter Smit, who has come from a sensational restaurant, the Pitt Cue in the heart of London, present a superb option – ‘nose to tail’. It means presenting a beast reared locally with varying menus presenting excellent cuts – a great concept. The restaurant focuses on supporting and showcasing local produce, capturing a unique blend of the superb tastes of the district. You may stay the night in cottages. Importantly, Leonards’ Mill, built by the Leonard brothers in 1858, is about maintaining Second Valley as a place for dining and experiencing moments of history.
