The Magic Cave was created in Adelaide 100 years ago this Christmas, and the pageants across the Fleurieu Peninsula will also continue their magnificent tradition down the main streets of our towns to welcome the world’s most popular man in a red suit – Santa Clause.
Sponsors, volunteers and fun-loving people have thrilled people of all ages at our pageants for years, and the crew at the Seachange Village at Goolwa have certainly got into the spirit of it all having won prizes the past five years for their creativity with their floats.
They’ve been many characters including retired super heroes and penguins, and it seems from the costumes (or are they for real?) worn by Seachange Village social club committee members Barry Cook and Margaret Loughhead above, there is going to be plenty of monkey business going on this year.
Barry said it’s a secret what their theme for this year’s pageant as part of the Goolwa Christmas Festival will be, but rest assured it will bring plenty of laughs once again.
These guys started planning their pageant performance in April, but according to Barry, even though the residents have enjoyed their success the effort they go to is not about winning trophies.
“We just get a huge kick out of turning the corner into Cadell Street and seeing all the smiles on people of all ages,” Barry said. “It’s not just about those who take part, but the spirit of Christmas. We’re proud to have represented the 150-plus residents at Seachange Village over the years – this is a team effort.”
The Victor Harbor pageant will be held on Saturday, December 13, and the Goolwa Christmas Festival will be the following night. And thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers! And what will Father Christmas bring you this year? Put it this way, if you’re not happy with what you end up with the Seachange crew is holding its annual indoor garage sale in the community hall on Sunday, January 4 from 8am-2pm if you care to buy something else. Who knows, Santa may even stay around and ho-ho-ho into the sausage sizzle.
